Corruption is on the rise in Washington. Pork barrel earmarks waste billions of American dollars. Elected officials and their special friends become millionaires while Americans watch helplessly.

A lot of people don’t realize how fast corruption is growing in Washington, DC. A lot of people do not know how big a problem pork barrel earmarks have become. Here is a simplified summary.

An earmark is a trick that allows a congressman (senator or representative) to send money to a pet project, not his money - our money. After a bill has been voted on, any elected official can sneak in money for his own personal project. This earmark does not get voted on. It just slides on through. It can go for a phony museum or a road to nowhere with the congressman’s name on it or it can go to a special friend as a payoff for votes or to repay a big contributor with a sweetheart deal. Experts tell us this is a great way for politicians to funnel illegal money to relatives or friends and that this is the gateway to corruption. Any Senator or Representative can do as many earmarks as they want. Many of these earmarks are totally wasteful projects and result in Americas money going into the pocket of someone totally undeserving of it. This is the main way that congressmen get rich and re-elected on your money. Keep in mind that as far as politicians are concerned getting re-elected and getting rich are more important than passing good laws or the future of our country.

Corruption is growing fast:
In 1970, the Defense Department Bill passed with 12 earmarks.

In 1980, the Defense Department Bill passed with 62 earmarks.

In 2005, the Defense Department Bill passed with 2671 earmarks.

One earmark was for money to eradicate brown tree snakes in Guam.

In 1950, the Transportation Bill passed with 2 earmarks.

In 2005, the Transportation Bill passed with 6371 earmarks, with $200,000 for deer avoidance in New York State and $3 million for dust control on rural roads in Arkansas. In all, there were about 15,000 earmarks in 2005 at a total cost of 47 billion dollars. Source: sourcewatch.com

Many politicians slip in 50 to 100 earmarks every year .

Earmarks can be stopped. They are easy to monitor. They have been perfected by elected officials as a way to get their hands on Americas money without the public knowing what is really going on.

Some younger congressmen have tried to stop or slow down earmarks but have been stopped by senior elected officials who control what passes and what doesn’t. A recent vote on a bill to stop earmarks in the senate was voted down 79 - 21. The good news from this is that it’s possible to create a bill that will make earmarks illegal. Other good news is that 21 senators realize it is important to stop earmarks.

How The Public Has Tried To Stop Corruption (But Failed Miserably)
The American public has made a big mistake. We elected what we thought were honest politicians and then we just let them go their merry way. We trusted them way too much. We have now learned the hard way that once in office most “honest” politicians can not stand up to the forces of corruption. It’s like thinking you can jump into a swimming pool and not get wet. We have gotten to the point where millions and millions of honest Americans do not vote because they feel defeated and helpless. Voting does not stop corruption. Millions of Americans write letters to politicians or make phone calls to politicians complaining about no honest representation. They waste hours and hours and get basically nothing for all their effort.

In their hearts and in their minds, most Americans yearn for honesty in government. They say they would do anything to get it. Because there is no one to call after your elected representatives ignore you, because there is no organization to be a police force to force honesty on politicians, we are left alone and frustrated. We have come to believe that the situation is hopeless. As long as we each act alone, as long as we are unorganized, scattered, isolated, and not united or coordinated in any way, we will be powerless to stop corruption and our so called leaders know this very well.

Another large factor that contributes to Americans’ failure to stop corruption is that there are hundreds of things that need fixing and there are many small groups who firmly believe that their chosen problem is the most important problem to be fixed. Hundreds of people writing letters and calling a politician might get one vote changed or a politician elected, but this is not going to stop corruption.

We need to bring a lot of us (millions) together and support one BIG important item that can really make a difference. We need to create a place where people can go and get something done. It has been proven that the larger the group the more effective it can be. It has been proven that you can not solve a lot of problems at the same time. If we can solve this one problem, we will do more than has ever been done before. We each have a small amount of political power - let’s not waste it - let’s put it all into one place along with millions of others just like us and let’s be the police force that stops corrupt pork barrel earmarks.
